Description
LISZT, Franz (1811-1886). Autograph letter signed addressed to Gaetano Belloni. Rome, 18 October 1871. 3 pp. in-8. Minor chips and a small split at the central fold without affecting the text. Liszt says " [...] I have the utmost confidence in your loyal intentions. However, I am not in a position to send you the orchestral parts of Orphée, as I do not possess them [...]. Shortly before my trip to Paris (in '66) I suggested to the publisher Härtel (Leipzig) that he should promptly autograph the parts for 4 other of my symphonic poems: Préludes, Héroïde funèbre, Mazeppa and the Symphonie dantesque. They were in the package of music left at Giacomelli's and had been used for the planned concert, which did not happen at the time. Since then several of my works have been performed in Germany and Hungary [...]. Lately two of my publishers have published orchestral parts, but I do not know whether these include the Orphée'. Liszt goes on to describe the characteristics of this piece, which is only an 'ideal breath' and is unlikely to please Belloni. He added that "the public treats it more like a pill than a pearl". Liszt then mentioned the desire of Jules Pasdeloup (1819-1887), conductor and pianist, to publish his works, despite the "difficulties and inconveniences of the task". Belloni was to write to C. F. Kahut in Leipzig in his capacity as former secretary, "who will facilitate the loan or acquisition of scores and orchestral parts [...]". He adds: 'As for myself, I have not had a single sheet for a long time, and I have made it a rule not to deal directly with their dispatch [...]. I am staying here for another three weeks, and will arrive in Pest [in Hungary] before mid-November. Large and handsome signature. Attached is a L.A.S. from Ludovic Halévy.
