Description
Jean-Michel BASQUIAT (1960–1988), after Untitled; Horn Players; All Coloured Cast I; Venta Limoges porcelain plate with polychrome enamelled decoration Ligne Blanche edition. D_ 21 cm Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) was a major American contemporary artist, born in Brooklyn to Haitian and Puerto Rican parents. First known in the 1970s for his graffiti signed ‘SAMO’ on the streets of New York, he quickly made his mark on the international art scene with his expressive, instinctive and deeply committed paintings. His work blends drawing, text and symbols, and addresses themes such as Black identity, racism, power, history, death and a critique of contemporary society. His raw style, marked by the energy of street art and expressionism, is characterised by the use of bright colours, fragmented figures, crossed-out words and multiple cultural references. A collaborator of Andy Warhol, Basquiat enjoyed a meteoric rise before his untimely death at the age of 27.
