Helmold of Bosau
A history of the life of the Emperor and Caesar Henry IIII, Augustus, and of Hiltebrand, Pope of Rome, known as Gregory VII, written around the time in which both lived. With an illustrative woodcut printer’s mark on the title page (repeated on fol. E4v), two 9-line woodcut initials featuring figures and floral ornamentation, a closing vignette of the same style, and a decorative border. Frankfurt, Andreas Wechel, 1581. 55 (1 blank) pp. Sign. A-D6, E4. Bound c. 1900 with handwritten title label (with losses and wear on the headbands).
Early print of the chronicle of the ‘Journey to Canossa’ by Henry IIII. – VD16 I 97. - An early Frankfurt edition of the vita of the Salian Emperor Henry IIII (1050–1106), written in the 12th century by Helmold of Bosau as part of his ‘Chronicle of the Slavs’, presented here in the humanist adaptation by the historian Reinhard Reineck. The first printed edition of the ‘Chronica Slavorum’ was also published in Frankfurt in 1559. - In 1076, as a result of secular struggles against ecclesiastical power in the ‘Investiture Controversy’, Henry IIII was excommunicated by Pope Gregory VII, whereupon Henry undertook the famous ‘Pilgrimage to Canossa’. - A separately bound copy of the edition, which is usually offered in anthologies comprising various sections of Helmold’s “Chronicle of the Slavs”. - Provenance: Dr Fritz Behrend (1878–1939), Germanist and archivist, with his signature on the recto of the front endpaper and his handwritten title label. - Paper slightly browned; otherwise a well-preserved, wide-margined copy of this significant historical account, which is rarely found on the market as a separate edition.
