Loci communes similium et dissimilium, collected from all ages, both sacred and profane, … By Ioannes Dadraeus. With a woodcut printer’s mark on the title page. Paris, published by Michael Julian on the hill of Saint Hilarion, (probably 1577 (handwritten date 1588)). 12 nn., 546 leaves. Contemporary paper with overhanging edges (somewhat stained and creased, without binding ribbons, spine with a repaired gap).
Rare first edition with date on the reverse of the title page and after the preface (handwritten date on the title page erroneously gives 1588). – Not listed in the VD16 or in Adams – An important theological and rhetorical lexicon of the late 16th century. It is a systematic encyclopaedia or collection of quotations, organised according to thematic keywords (e.g. virtues, vices, key theological concepts). Jean Dadré was a Doctor of Theology at the Sorbonne in Paris and served as a penitential preacher, as well as a canon and archdeacon at Rouen Cathedral. – Inner fold damaged.
