Description
Theology – Bibles
La Bible qui est Toute la Saincte Escriture. 2 vols. Geneva, Sebastian Honorati, 1670. 2 leaves, 494 leaves, 1 leaf, 70 leaves, 258 leaves, 199 leaves, 1 leaf 12°. Red leather with gilt edging, gilt fillets, gilt vignette on the front cover and gilt edges (heavily scuffed and bumped, some joints cracked).
Rare. – With a handwritten ownership note by Jean Roth, as well as handwritten annotations on the endpaper and half-title page. – A small, compact 17th-century edition of the Bible in French. This is an edition of the so-called ‘Bible de Genève’, the classic Calvinist-Reformed translation of the Bible into French, which is based on Pierre-Robert Olivétan’s 1535 translation and was subsequently revised on several occasions by John Calvin and later Genevan theologians. The present edition from 1670 follows, textually, the important revision of 1669, which had been drawn up by the Geneva Pastors’ Company (‘Compagnie des pasteurs’) and served as the authoritative textual basis for the Reformed Geneva Bible prints of the following decades. At the same time, a large, richly annotated folio edition of this revision by Samuel and Henri Desmarets was published in Amsterdam by the Elzeviers; by contrast, this Geneva edition, printed in two volumes, represents a more compact edition intended for practical use. - Margins slightly browned. Minimal staining. Overall, very well-preserved copies in decorative bindings.
