Biblia, that is: the entire Holy Scripture of the Old and New Testaments, translated into German by Doctor Martin Luther … With 2 engraved frontispieces and 11 partly additional etched copper plates, including 1 with 2 maps and 1 folded plate. Schaffhausen, Müller, 1770. 9 leaves (frontispiece, title page, preface), 940 pp. and 1 fol. (frontispiece), 263 (5, recte 278) pp., 8 fol. (register), 44 pp. 2°. Magnificent contemporary blind-embossed pigskin binding in the German Renaissance style (with very minor defects in the covering, somewhat bumped, scuffed and stained).
A stately, richly illustrated Schaffhausen Luther Bible. - The magnificent binding features five raised bands over wooden boards bevelled at the edges; the spine is divided into six compartments marked by roller-stamped scrollwork in a palmette design; the covers feature three double iron-stamped frames, these rolled with floral interlacing and featuring embossed and engraved brass fittings in a floral design on the bare central panels, as well as matching corner fittings, intact brass clasps and a marbled edge on the reverse. - Handwritten owner’s notes from the early 19th century on the recto of the third endpaper and the back endpaper; also, on the same page, a mounted sheet containing printed sermons. - Folios Bbbb bbbb2 (pp. 649/650) slightly trimmed with minor loss of text at the top margin; pagination break on pp. 163–173; a few other folios mispaginated. Slightly browned throughout, only minimally stained; otherwise a well-preserved copy of this Bible in a magnificent binding with bold, partly serrated copperplate engravings.

The spine is divided into six compartments, each decorated with a scroll-and-vine motif in a palmette design applied using a roller stamp. The boards feature three double blind-stamped frames, embossed with roller stamps depicting interlacing floral patterns, and feature embossed and engraved brass fittings in a floral design on the bare central panels, as well as matching corner fittings, intact brass clasps and marbled edges throughout. - Handwritten owner’s notes from the early 19th century on the recto of the third endpaper and the rear paste-down, where there is also a mounted sheet of printed sermons. - Fol. Bbbb bbbb2 (pp. 649/650) slightly trimmed with minor loss of text at the top margin. Pagination error between pp. 163–173; a few other folios are also mispaginated. Slightly browned throughout, with only minimal staining; otherwise a well-preserved copy of this Luther Bible in a magnificent binding featuring bold, partly well-blurred copperplate engravings.
