Description
Theology – Biblia germanica
Biblia, that is: The entire Holy Scripture in German. Martin Luther. Now revised anew in accordance with the latest edition, which Dr Martin Luther himself carefully proofread before his death: and supplemented with useful summaries of all chapters, as well as certain verses, by Veit Dieterich. Together with new essential indexes, and adorned with beautiful illustrations. With a title page printed in red and black, a hand-coloured woodcut portrait of Luther and numerous hand-coloured text woodcuts after Virgil Solis. 3 parts in 1 volume. Frankfurt, Johann Saur for Vincenz Steinmeyer, 1614. 2°. 26 unnumbered leaves, 350, 230, 163 numbered leaves, 4 unnumbered leaves. Folio. Contemporary binding.
Cf. Adams B-1178 – Schmidt, 223–226, 231–232. – A rare Frankfurt folio edition of the Luther Bible. The text follows the final Wittenberg edition of 1545, supplemented by chapter summaries by the Nuremberg preacher Veit Dietrich (1506–1549). It was printed by Johann Saur (1573–1636) for the publisher Vincenz Steinmeyer (1578–1667). The section headings for the Prophets and the New Testament still bear the date 1606. The edition is therefore based on the Saur-Steinmeyer Bible of 1606 and was published in 1614 with a new main title. The woodcuts are derived from Virgil Solis’s Bible series. – 6 leaves missing. Slight water staining on the fore-edge of the first 40 leaves (without affecting the text). Light to heavy foxing throughout. Interior in good to very good condition; woodcuts in very good condition.
