Description
Theology – Biblia Germanica The entire Bible, comprising all the books of the Old and New Testaments, translated into German as faithfully as possible from the original languages. 2 parts in 1 volume. With 2 red, old-style woodcut title borders and numerous woodcut illustrations within the text. Zurich, Froschauer, 1560. Folio. 29 leaves (excluding the last blank one), CCCXXXIV, CCCXV leaves (excluding the last blank one). Contemporary leather binding on 5 bands (heavily scuffed, cover with missing sections, headbands with tears). A later edition of the large, richly illustrated German Froschauer Bible. – VD16 B 2751 – Vischer C 562 – Rudolphi 518. - The Froschauer Bible is regarded, both typographically and artistically, as one of the most significant Bible prints of all time. A large proportion of the richly detailed woodcuts (particularly those relating to the Old Testament and the Revelation of St John) are based on drawings by Hans Holbein the Younger. Froschauer and Zwingli emphasised that the vivid scenes should be ‘amusing and stimulating’ to help readers better remember and understand the content of the biblical texts. - Title page slightly browned, with small stains and some tears backed, fol. 28 with backed tear; vol. 2, approx. 70 leaves with a continuous small brown or damp stain; 1 leaf with a patch in the outer margin; the last 14 leaves with larger marginal defects backed, including 2 leaves with minor loss of text, last leaf stained and with significant loss of text, backed across the entire page, partly with small water stains, but overall a good, clean copy.
