Sermons by Protestant theologians. Edited by J. P. Bamberger. 5 (of 7) volumes (= collections). With 5 title vignettes and woodcut ornamentation. Berlin, Mylius, 1771–75. Approx. 1,700 pp. 8°. Marbled endpapers. Contemporary leather binding with gold-embossed title and volume number on a leather label, rich floral gilding on the spine, gold-embossed ornamental Filet binding on covers and inner edges, endpapers of multicoloured veined paste paper with irregular decoration, coloured edges on the reverse and ribbon bookmarks (somewhat bumped, scuffed and stained). A rare anthology comprising over 70 pulpit sermons from German Enlightenment theology, from a distinguished collection. Illustrated with 5 woodcut title vignettes and several woodcut head-and-tailpieces. With contributions by, amongst others, the editor, Johann Joachim Spalding and Georg Joachim Zollikofer. In the supplementary volume No. 7 (1799), the collection contains, anonymously, the earliest printed sermons by Friedrich Schleiermacher. - Provenance: The reverse of the title pages bear the stamp of the Royal Joachimsthal Grammar School (dissolved in 1956) as a bequest from Princess Anna Amalie of Prussia (1723–87), the youngest sister of Frederick the Great: “Gymnasio Reg: Joachim: Legate: From the collection of: Striss. Princess Amalia”. (Regarding the bequest: Köpke, F. C.: History of the Library of the Royal Joachimsthal Grammar School … Berlin, 1831, pp. 22ff.) – Very slightly browned throughout; a set in very good overall condition with contemporary coloured endpapers retaining their original colour. A scarce collection comprising over 70 pulpit sermons from German Enlightenment theology, our set from a distinguished provenance. Illustrated with 5 woodcut title vignettes and several woodcut head- and tailpieces. Bound in contemporary marbled calf with rich gold tooling and superb multicoloured veined paste paper. - With contributions by, amongst others, the editor, Johann Joachim Spalding and Georg Joachim Zollikofer.
