Description
A collection of 94 small-format printed works, mostly religious, from Prussia. 4 volumes. Mainly Berlin, as well as Brandenburg, Cottbus, Frankfurt an der Oder, Halberstadt, Halle, Lauban (Luban), Lissa (Lezsno), Königsberg (Kaliningrad), Magdeburg, Minden, Potsdam, Stargard, Stralsund, Wittenberg and Züllichau (Sulechow), various publishers, 1756–1806 or no place specified, year and place of printing unknown. Approx. 1,000 pp. on paper of varying thickness and trim, some mint-green. 8° and small 8°. Early 19th-century bindings with ornamental title labels on paper, some with gold edging on the reverse (occasionally slightly torn at the heads, corners and edges partly bumped and scuffed).
An extremely extensive collection of partly very rare small-format works, including several from the collection of, and one dedicated to, Amalie of Prussia. - Containing sermons and speeches on the occasion of births, weddings, funerals and ceremonial events attended by, amongst others, the King and other dignitaries; on New Year’s occasions; sermons of thanksgiving, and celebrations of military successes, as well as curiosities such as speeches delivered to those condemned to death, etc. – In Vol. 3, a sermon by Friedrich Schleiermacher on the occasion of King Frederick William III’s birthday (1806). Vol. 4 with a musical score printed from an engraved plate, ‘Couplets au sujet du jubilé célébré par la colonie française de Berlin’, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the admission of the Huguenots, with a handwritten dedication by the Berlin bookseller Etienne de Bourdeaux, who published the work, to Princess Amalie of Prussia (1723–1787). – Some with engraved title pages and woodcut ornamentation. - Provenance: Many of the title pages bear, on the reverse, the stamp of the Royal Joachimsthal Grammar School (closed in 1956) as part of a bequest by the Prussian Minister of Justice, Friedrich Wilhelm von Thulemeier (1735–1811): “Gymnasio Reg: Joachim: Legat: Ab Illustr: Thulemeiero” and from Anna Amalie of Prussia: “Gymnasio Reg: Joachim: Legat: Ab Illustr: Striss. Principe Amalia”. (On the bequests: Köpke, F. C.: History of the Library of the Royal Joachimsthal Grammar School … Berlin, 1831, pp. 22ff.) - Pages partly trimmed more closely by the bookbinder; consequently, a few of the prints show minimal loss of text at the outer margins; varying degrees of browning, some with slight foxing. - Overall, a well-preserved, likely unique collection, some items with prominent provenance; a collection which also documents the rich history of small-format print production in Berlin and Brandenburg during the 18th and early 19th centuries.
An exceptionally extensive collection of scarce ephemeral works, mostly of a religious nature, including several from the collection of, and one dedicated to, Amalie of Prussia. Bound in four early 19th-century cardboard bindings with decorative gilt titles on paper labels, some with gilt edges (the edges of the pages are occasionally slightly torn, and the corners and edges are in places bumped and worn). - Containing sermons and speeches delivered on the occasion of births, weddings, anniversaries, funerals and ceremonial events attended by, amongst others, the various Prussian kings and other dignitaries, as well as on the occasion of military successes, but also curiosities such as speeches to those condemned to death, etc. - In Vol. 3, a sermon by Friedrich Schleiermacher on the occasion of the birthday of King Frederick William III (1806). Vol. 4 features a music print on an engraved plate, ‘Couplets au sujet du jubilé célébré par la colonie Française de Berlin’, marking the 100th anniversary of the admission of the Huguenots, with a handwritten dedication by the Berlin bookseller Etienne de Bourdeaux, who published the work, to Princess Amalie of Prussia (1723–87). - Some prints feature engraved title pages and woodcut ornamentation. - Provenance: Many of the title pages bear a stamp on the reverse from the Royal Joachimsthal Grammar School (closed in 1956) as a bequest of the Prussian Minister of Justice Friedrich Wilhelm von Thulemeier (1735–1811): “Gymnasio Reg: Joachim: Legat: Ab Illustr: Thulemeiero” and from Princess Anna Amalie of Prussia: “Gymnasio Reg: Joachim: Legat: Ab Illustr: Striss. Principe Amalia”. - Some sheets have been trimmed more closely by the bookbinder; consequently, a few of the prints show minimal loss of text at the outer margins. Occasionally with slight browning and some minor foxing. - Overall, a well-preserved, likely unique collection of distinguished provenance, which also documents the rich history of ephemeral book production in Berlin and Brandenburg during the 18th and early 19th centuries.
