Spalding et al., Johann Joachim A collection of 68 occasional and other sermons, devotional writings and theological essays. 5 volumes. With numerous woodcut vignettes, some of which are large, as well as decorative frames and borders. Mainly Berlin, also Frankfurt/Oder and Leipzig, various publishers, 1775–86. Approx. 2,000 pages of paper of varying thickness and trim, some mint-coloured and some folded. 8°. Partly marbled. Contemporary calf leather binding with gold-embossed title and, in some cases, volume number on leather labels; rich, partly floral gilding on the spine; gold-embossed ornamental Filet binding on covers, fore-edges and inner edges; endpapers of multicoloured veined paste paper with irregular decoration or multicoloured marbled paper; reverse edges with gold or red edging, some punched; and ribbon bookmarks (partly torn at the heads and joints, somewhat scuffed and stained). Extensive collection of pulpit sermons and other writings by leading German Enlightenment theologians, all volumes with prominent Prussian provenance. - Including sermons delivered on the occasion of deaths, commemorative services, tributes, etc., for various members of the Prussian royal family (including King Frederick II) and other secular and ecclesiastical dignitaries, church consecrations, as well as numerous other sermons, devotional writings and theological essays by Johann Joachim Spalding (1714–1804), Friedrich Samuel Gottfried Sack (1738–1814) and others. – Provenance: The reverse side of the first title pages of each volume bears the stamp of the Royal Joachimsthal Grammar School (dissolved in 1956) as part of a bequest from Princess Anna Amalie of Prussia (1723–87): “Gymnasio Reg: Joachim: Legat: Ab Illustr: Striss. Principe Amalia”. (Regarding the bequest: Köpke, F. C.: Geschichte der Bibliothek des Königl. Joachimsthalschen Gymnasiums … Berlin, 1831, pp. 22ff.) – Some pages have been trimmed narrowly, though without loss of text; slight foxing in places; overall, a well-preserved, likely unique collection with a focus on Berlin-based publishers (including Decker, Himburg, Rellstab, Voß and Winter).
