Letters Concerning the Preacher’s Simplicity. Halle, Kümmel, 1798. XX (title page, dedication, preface, table of contents), 196 pp. Small 8° format. Contemporary calf leather binding with gold-stamped title on the front cover, rich gilt decoration on the spine, gold-stamped, partly ornamental Filet binding on covers and fore-edges, endpapers of plain-coloured paper, and gold edging on the reverse, punched at head and foot (slightly scuffed and stained).
First and only edition; our copy has a distinguished provenance. - VD18: 11272651. - A major work on practical theology by Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Thym (1768–1803), a Reformed minister, teacher and author of numerous theological, historical and homiletic writings. - Provenance: Verso of the title page bears the stamp of the Royal Joachimsthal Grammar School (dissolved in 1956) as part of a bequest by the Prussian Minister of Justice, Friedrich Wilhelm von Thulemeier (1735–1811), to whom the author also dedicated the work whilst it was in press. (Regarding the bequest: Köpke, F. C.: Geschichte der Bibliothek des Königl. Joachimsthalschen Gymnasiums … Berlin, 1831, pp. 22ff.) - Very slight browning throughout; otherwise a very well-preserved print on sturdy handmade paper. - Also included: 1.
