Description
Voltaire The Bible, at last explained by many alms-givers to His Majesty the King of Prussia. Translated from the French by Mr Voltaire. Third, expanded and improved edition. 2 parts in 1 volume. With 2 engraved frontispieces. London (i.e. Vienna, Mößle, 1787). 4 leaves, 296, 280 pp. 8°. Contemporary half-leather binding with gilt spine and pasted paper cover (somewhat rubbed and bumped). Rare. – Not listed in VD18. – Contrary to the edition note on the title page, this is presumably the first edition in the German language. The French original was published in 1776 under the title ‘La Bible enfin expliquée, par plusieurs aumôniers de S.M.L.R.D.P.’, with a new edition following in 1777. The reference to the “3rd edition” may refer to the total number of editions published to date. – Slightly browned and with some light staining. Overall, a good copy.
