Description
Garibaldi, Ricciotti
A collection of 3 autograph letters bearing the signature of Garibaldi Ricciotti, as well as 2 original letters bearing the signature of his wife, Harriet Constance (née Hopcraft), addressed to her nephew Gordon Cumming in England. Rome, 1887–1925.
Ricciotti Garibaldi (Montevideo 1847–1924), like his father, Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807–1882), was a soldier and fought alongside him in the Italian Revolution. - Contains: 3 letters from Garibaldi R. dated 24 April 1887, 12 May and 27 July 1889. Two on his official letterhead as a Member of the Italian Parliament and one on paper with a mourning border and a printed monogram. With one addressed envelope. - “In fact, I want you to learn Italian … my dear children, enjoy yourselves as much as you can whilst you are young – for life becomes anything but enjoyable as you grow older.” - 2 letters from “Harry” (Harriet) on stationery from the “Ospedale Giuseppe Garibaldi Isola Maddalena” hospital. – She asks for the printing block for Giuseppe’s tomb on the nearby island of Caprera, the family seat. Apparently Gordon was the artist, and his aunt wishes to have some postcards printed from the printing block to raise money for her hospital. - Folding creases; in good overall condition. - Interesting documentation of the famous family and their connections to England. - Includes: 7 contemporary newspapers (Bristol Gazette (5), The Illustrated London News, portrait of Joseph Garibaldi from ‘The Graphic’). - G.M. Trevelyan. Garibaldi’s Defence of The Roman Republic. NY, 1907. Contemporary cloth binding (stained).
