Eliezer ‘Eli’ Wiesel, born in Sighet, Romania, in 1928 and who died in New York in 2016, was a journalist, philosopher, intellectual and one of the most significant Jewish writers of the post-war period. As a survivor of the Nazi concentration camps at Auschwitz and Buchenwald, he made the memory of the Shoah the central focus of his literary, journalistic and humanitarian work. His autobiographical work *Night* is regarded as one of the defining testimonies of Holocaust literature. In 1986, Wiesel was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his commitment to human rights, his opposition to persecution, and his defence of the dignity of the victims of violence and genocide. At the same time, he was deeply committed to educational and remembrance work, as well as to preserving the memory of the Shoah worldwide.
