Description
Antiquity A table of events, deities, rulers and dates from Jewish, Assyrian, Ancient Greek, Ancient Egyptian and Roman mythology and history. Undated (probably 17th century). Manuscript written in calligraphy in orange, gold, blue, brown-red and black on handmade paper. Sheet dimensions 77 x 55 cm. A large-format manuscript in meticulous calligraphy and vivid colours, presenting a tabular overview of events, figures and dates from ancient mythology and history. - The table consists of five columns in different colours, each representing an ancient civilisation (titled ‘Hebrai’, ‘Assyrii’, ‘Greci’, ‘Aegyptii’ and ‘Romani’), each with 6 rows, making a total of 30 segments. Each segment contains an accurate Latin text, arranged from top to bottom in chronological order according to the Hebrew calendar, recounting events and the gods, rulers and places affected. - Thus, the text in the ‘Hebrai’ column begins at the top left with ‘Adam’ and ends at the bottom left with the Jewish year 4054 and ‘...imperii Augusti 31 nascitur Cristus’. The ‘Romani’ column begins with ‘Pelasgi extrema Italie occupant abiis magna Grecia.’ and ends with ‘4023. Octavius imperator’. The body text is written in black. Notably, the manuscript can also be read as hypertext; that is, through the use of the respective colour associated with each culture (e.g. blue for Greek), systematic references to related content in the other columns are established. - The margins have been expertly consolidated, though there are some foxing spots in places.
