Art Nouveau 2 albums belonging to the Neuendorff family, Berlin. Containing 30 and 51 large-format hand-drawn illustrations and photographs respectively. c. 1892–1934. Folio and landscape folio leather-bound albums with elaborate leather-cut designs on the covers and unbound album pages on heavy card. The sheets are either loose or held together in screw-bound folders with green and burgundy linen spines. These consist of cardboard pages with silver gelatine and albumin prints, as well as picture postcards, glued onto them. The photographs are set within full-page, hand-painted compositions in gouache and watercolour. Some are highlighted with Indian ink, white overpaint and gold bronze, whilst others bear inscriptions. These magnificent albums document the life of the Neuendorff family in their home on Bayernallee in Berlin, their education (Eichkamp School, Berlin), their travels (Venice, Müritz, St Moritz, Oberuff, Berchtesgaden, Knole Lodge, Bad Pyrmont, Neupfalz near Stromberg), and her work (as a nurse at the Heiliggeist Hospital, 1917). - The large-format single pages also form part of a personal memory album belonging to the Neuendorff family, comprising the parents Karl and Wilhelmine with Annemarie, Ursula and Barbara. The family can be traced in the Berlin address books via the father, the lawyer Karl Neuendorff: 1921 Westendallee 97b, 1924–1930 Bayernallee 5 (Charlottenburg-Westend), and from 1931 until at least 1943 as the owner of Falterweg 29 in the Eichkamp estate. Professionally, he was deputy legal adviser and, subsequently, chief legal adviser to the Association of German Occupational Accident Insurance Associations (Berlin W 9, Köthener Str. 37; from 1941, the Reich Association of Industrial Occupational Accident Insurance Associations, Nikolsburger Platz 4) and managing director of Unfallverhütungsbild GmbH. They depict the everyday life of Berlin’s upper middle class during the Wilhelmine Empire and the Weimar Republic. Each page is designed as a self-contained work of art.
