Description
Liber Amicorum by the Vaerst family Family album. ‘Du Souvenir’ (German title). Containing over 70 entries by members of the nobility and the upper middle classes, numerous original drawings, engravings and several paper cuttings from Bochum, Nuremberg, Bayreuth, Metz, Glogau, Wohlau, Breslau, Chemnitz and elsewhere. c. 1785–1805. 354 pp. Landscape 8° format. Contemporary calf leather binding with rich gold embossing. Gold-edged. An important family and friendship album from the circle of the Westphalian von Vaerst family and the Prussian-Silesian military nobility. The album documents, between 1787 and 1805, a wide-ranging network of kinship, contacts amongst officers, friendships and intellectual circles. Particularly noteworthy is the connection between the von Vaerst family and the von Wolfframsdorff family: Friedrich Christian Eugen Baron von Vaerst, who later authored *Gastrosophie*, was, on his mother’s side, a grandson of the Prussian Lieutenant-General Adam Heinrich von Wolfframsdorff. The repeated entries concerning members of the von Wolfframsdorff family are therefore significant not only in social terms but also in terms of family history. The geographical focus lies in Prussian Silesia, particularly in Glogau, Wohlau and Breslau, and points to a milieu in which the nobility, military careers, garrison life, administration and family patronage were closely intertwined. Several names documented in the album belong to this military-aristocratic milieu: Baron von Wolfframsdorff, F. von Bothmer, F. von Kersenbrock, von Schkopp, von Graevenitz, von Schliffen, von Lobbe, von Strobiszenski, Carl von Sydow, von Bolkmer, J. C. C. G. W. J. von Haller, Friedrich von der Lühe, as well as other lieutenants, captains and members of noble families. The von Vaerst family does not appear in isolation here, but rather as the centre of a network encompassing family, the military and social life. At the same time, the network extends from Westphalia through Saxony and Franconia as far as Metz. Those mentioned include, amongst others, Friedrich Christian Ernst von Vaerst, G. H. von Koeney, von Bolkmer, Baron von Wolfframsdorff, Aron Graetz, F. von Bothmer, F. von Kersenbrock, Baron von Wolfframsdorff, Johann Albert Matti, von Schkopp, von Graevenitz, von Schliffer, Bergholtz zu Wesel, J. C. C. G. W. J. von Haller, Carl Sydow, Wilhelmine von Bessel, Henricus de Stokker, Juliane von Vaerst, Wilhelmine von Vaerst, Kortum, Marie Élisabeth Mangeroy and Louise Brydgeson. Album amicorum. ‘Du Souvenir’ (title on spine). Circa 1785–1805. 354 pp. Oblong octavo. Contemporary richly gilt calf binding. Gilt edges. An important family and friendship album from the circle of the Westphalian von Vaerst family and the Prussian-Silesian military aristocracy. The album documents, between 1787 and 1805, an extensive network of kinship, officers’ contacts, friendships and scholarly circles. Of particular importance is the connection between the von Vaerst and von Wolfframsdorff families: Friedrich Christian Eugen Freiherr von Vaerst, later the author of *Gastrosophie*, was the maternal grandson of the Prussian Lieutenant-General Adam Heinrich von Wolfframsdorff. The repeated entries by members of the von Wolfframsdorff family therefore have not only social but also genealogical significance. The geographical focus lies in Prussian Silesia, notably in Glogau, Wohlau and Breslau, pointing to a milieu in which the nobility, a military career, garrison life, administration and family patronage were closely intertwined. Several names recorded in the album belong to this military-aristocratic milieu: Baron von Wolfframsdorff, F. von Bothmer, F. von Kersenbrock, von Schkopp, von Graevenitz, von Schliffen, von Lobbe, von Strobiszenski, Carl von Sydow, von Bolkmer, J. C. C. G. W. J. von Haller, Friedrich von der Lühe, as well as other lieutenants, captains and members of noble families. The von Vaerst family thus appears not in isolation, but at the centre of a network of family, military service and social life. At the same time, this network extended from Westphalia through Saxony and Franconia to Metz. Among those named are Friedrich Christian Ernst von Vaerst, G. H. von Koeney, von Bolkmer, Baron von Wolframsdorf, Aron Graetz, F. von Bothmer, F. von Kersenbrock, Baron von Wolfframsdorff, Johann Albert Matti, von Schkopp, von Graevenitz, von Schliffer, Bergholtz of Wesel, J. C. C. G. W. J. von Haller, Carl Sydow, Wilhelmine von Bessel, Henricus de Stokker, Juliane von Vaerst, Wilhelmine von Vaerst, Kortum, Marie Élisabeth Mangeroy, and Louise Brydgeson.
