Description
Liber amicorum – Silesia Johann Gottlieb Kirchner’s autograph book with a watercolour-illustrated title page, 96 entries, including those by teachers, teacher-trainee students and assistants at the Breslau teacher-training colleges, 14 watercolour drawings and 1 folded copperplate engraving. Mostly Breslau and Malkwitz, 1795–1837. Landscape 8°. A very rare document on the school system in Breslau. - Contains numerous entries by participants in the Breslau teacher-training seminars, where, at the end of the 18th century, primary school teachers were trained on behalf of the Prussian state as part of the Prussian school reform. The Royal Prussian Senior Consistorial Councillor of the Breslau Protestant Churches, David Gottfried Gerhard (1734–1809), is regarded as the initiator and patron; he founded a schoolmasters’ or teachers’ college around 1780 and is also featured in this autograph book alongside his copperplate portrait. - ‘A tribute to highly esteemed teachers, patrons and friends’ with entries by: Carl Gottlieb Back (Cand. Philos.), Johann Heinrich Baumgarth (schoolteacher in Hohwelze Grünberg, currently a seminarian), Gottfried Biewald (horticulturist), Andr. Gottl. According to this, their father Johann Gottlieb (1749–1812) was a schoolteacher in Schmellwitz. The mother was Barbara Elisabeth, née Hofmann (1742–1812). - Another memorial dedicated by Johann Gottlieb Kirchner and his surviving family on the occasion of his brother’s death in 1831. - The drawings are mostly views (churchyards at Illnisch and Malkwitz). - A few leaves are missing; mostly stained by fingerprints, some creased, otherwise generally in good condition.
