Missal
Les huit tons et autres. Manuscript of musical notation based on E. P. Charbonnier, in Latin and French on heavy vellum. Throughout, adorned with borders, decorative objects (vases), ornamental frames and mouldings, medallions, vignettes, etc., as well as initials and titles or text embellished with multicoloured foliage, flowers and tendrils. Undated (France, probably the Diocese of Fréjus), 1847. 1 leaf (title page), 127 (1 blank) pages. 26.5 x 17.5 cm. Square and diamond grids over text in serif Antiqua typeface, both stencilled in black ink within and upon pencil frames and lines. Folio (approx. 45 x 31 cm). Contemporary half-maroquin binding with gold-stamped, ornamented framed title on a morocco label, decorative gilt edging; the covers lined with Kiebitz paper (spine with losses at the lower end, rear joint cracked, the covers with losses in the lining, scuffed).
A neatly calligraphied and magnificently decorated musical manuscript by an unknown hand, based on the work of the same name by E. P. Charbonnier. – Contains 14 Mass settings, including 10 (2 repeated) from the cycle ‘Les Huit tons’. - Étienne-Paul Charbonnier (1793–1872) was a canon, organist and choirmaster at Aix-en-Provence Cathedral. He transcribed numerous works of church music for the organ; in this instance, these include, amongst others, those by Henry Dumont (1610–84), in an attempt to harmonise the eight tones of the Roman Gregorian chant, which enjoyed great popularity during the Second Empire. - The title page, flyleaves and some leaves show occasional slight finger-stains in the white margins; overall, a beautifully preserved manuscript.
