Description
Middle Ages – Antiphonary leaves Four fragments from an antiphonary or psalter, featuring numerous coloured initials in red and blue and a coloured system of lines. Latin manuscript. Gothic Textualis (liturgical minuscule) on parchment. 15 × 16.5 cm to 38.6 × 22 cm. Central Europe, late 14th, early 15th century (1370–1430). Provenance: Estate of a bookbinder. - Fragments of endpaper from a book cover. The music is written on red four-line staves with squares and diamonds (square notation), as developed from the late 11th century onwards and which became the standard for Gregorian chant in the 13th–15th centuries. The form of the neumes (clear squares, pes, clivis, etc.) and the relatively dense, uniform textualisation suggest the 14th–early 15th century rather than early Romanesque or very late Renaissance script. Contents comprising the antiphons of Psalms 80 and 88 respectively. – Partly typical of such fragments, with lacunae and blacked-out areas on the reverse.
