Description
Middle Ages – Book of Hours leaves I. Collection of 2 leaves (4 pages) from a Book of Hours. Partially rubricated in red and blue, with small gilded Lombard initials and coloured marginal borders; metal-cut on parchment. Text area: 14.2 x 9.6 cm (17.3 x 11.2 cm). Presumably from a French book of hours printed in Paris around 1500, in the style of the printers and publishers Simon Vostre, Thielman Kerver or one of their successors. II. Collection of 6 leaves (12 pages) from a book of hours. Partially rubricated in red and blue, with small gilded Lombard initials and coloured line fillers. Text area: 17.4 x 11.2 cm (20.2 x 14 cm). Metal-engraved on parchment. Probably dated to around 1500–1515 from the workshop of Philippe Pigouchet for the publisher Simon Vostre or a very close successor to this tradition. I. In terms of content, it comprises sections from the Office of the Holy Spirit and Marian psalms/antiphons, as found in the ‘Officium de Sancto Spiritu’ and ‘Officium Beatae Mariae Virginis’ sections of the Book of Hours. II. The text includes psalms, litanies (‘Sancte Petre, ora pro nobis’, etc.) and orations – in short, the usual core content of a Marian breviary. Each page is entirely surrounded by a four-sided border frame of fine metal engravings, featuring grotesques, animals, cherubs, scenes from everyday life and the Bible, as well as ‘Danse macabre’motifs; it is precisely these highly detailed metal-cut frames that are characteristic of Pigouchet’s Parisian prints for Simon Vostre from around 1496–1508.
