Description
Book Covers – Silver-bound Elaborate book cover featuring highly intricate ornamentation with a central cross on both covers. The decoration consists of openwork, sinuous tendrils and floral motifs arranged in a dense, symmetrical pattern. Silver. 14.1 x 25.1 cm. Germany, late 18th/early 19th century. The binding is designed as a clamshell cover, with solid, curved edges and small pendants or hooks at the corners. A large, stylised cross is prominently displayed in the centre of each lid, surrounded by oval frames featuring intricate leaf and floral ornamentation; the surface resembles a finely openwork latticework of silver wire. The reverse of the cover features similar motifs with additional curving bands and pearl-like dots, suggesting the use of repoussé and filigree techniques.
