Description
Book Covers - Silver Cover An intricately crafted, filigree book cover featuring embossed reliefs and ornamentation. It depicts biblical scenes – John the Baptist pointing towards Christ and the Baptism of Christ in the River Jordan. Surrounding tendrils, flowers, cherubs and musical motifs frame the scenes, typical of Baroque and Rococo silversmithing. Bearing silver and hallmark marks on both wings. 26 x 15.6 cm (when opened). Probably a South German (likely Augsburg or Nuremberg) Rococo silverwork, circa 1730–1750. The combination of openwork rocaille scrollwork, vases of fruit and flowers, cherubs and angels playing music corresponds exactly to the repertoire of South German Rococo silversmiths, as documented, for example, in Augsburg.
