Description
The Wonders of the World. The Travels of Sir Jean de Mandeville (Livre des merveilles, FR 2810, folios 141–225). Facsimile with 74 miniatures gilded in gold and silver, together with a commentary volume. 2 vols. (facsimile and commentary). Simbach, Müller & Schindler and Madrid, Eikon Editors, 2017. Large folio and 8°. Leather with gold embossing on 8 bands and cloth with title and spine embossing. Together in an oakwood case.
One of 900 numbered copies. – Between January 1410 and the end of 1412 at the latest, the manuscript recounting the adventures of the knight Jean de Mandeville was produced in Paris, resulting in one of the most popular travelogues of the Middle Ages. The most famous and talented illuminators, such as the Mazarine, Cité-des-dames and Egerton Masters, collaborated on the project. The result is a travelogue that is, quite literally, magnificent. The supposed author identifies himself in the text as Jean de Mandeville, an English knight who set out in 1322 and is said to have returned to his homeland only in 1356, having travelled through almost every country in the world for thirty years. The depictions range from venerable sites in the Holy Land to exotic scenes in the Far East. Seventy-four resplendent miniatures, executed with consummate artistry, illustrate motifs from these adventures. – In very good condition, a copy in pristine condition.
