Beaurain (Jean-Baptiste de) and Philippe-Henri de Grimoard
History of the Four Last Campaigns of Marshal de Turenne in 1672, 1673, 1674 & 1675. Vol. 1 (of 2). With 6 engraved vignettes. Paris, published by the Chevalier de Beaurain, 1782. vii, 217 pp. Folio. Contemporary leather binding with red edges, gold-stamped spine label, rich red decoration, gold-stamped fillet, small corner fleurons and 3 (of 5) (late) small ornamental metal fittings on the front cover (worn, bumped, foot capital with a missing section, joints with a few wormholes).
Graesse I, 317. - A significant French work of military historiography and historical cartography covering the last four campaigns of Marshal Henri de La Tour d’Auvergne, Viscount de Turenne (1611–1675), one of the outstanding military commanders of the Grand Siècle. It covers the years 1672 to 1675, thus the decisive final phase of Turenne’s military career during the Dutch War. The volume documents the French operations against the Netherlands and their allies, whilst also tracing the strategic movements of the armies in the Netherlands, Lorraine, Alsace and along the Rhine. The historical account is attributed to Philippe-Henri, Comte de Grimoard, whilst the cartographic and topographical illustrations were produced by members of the Beaurain family of geographers. Grimoard is said to have been so dissatisfied with the censors’ interventions in his text that the majority of copies were published under Beaurain’s name; the title is therefore also an interesting example of the complex authorship relationships in late 18th-century military history publishing. Without the atlas. – Inside cover with a stamped bookplate of Comes Baillet de Latour; front endpaper with a small tear in the margin; partly slightly stained; a beautifully bound copy.
France. – 1 (of 2) vols. Text vol. without atlas. With 6 engraved vignettes. Contemporary leather with red edges, gilt label, richly gilt spine, gilt fillets, small corner fleurons and 3 (of 5) (late) small ornamental metal fittings on the front cover (rubbed, bumped, loss at the lower spine, joints with a few wormholes). - An important French work of military historiography and historical cartography dealing with the last four campaigns of Marshal Henri de La Tour d’Auvergne, Viscount de Turenne (1611–1675), one of the foremost military commanders of the Grand Siècle. It covers the years 1672 to 1675, the decisive final phase of Turenne’s military career during the Franco-Dutch War. The volume documents French operations against the Dutch Republic and its allies, whilst also tracing the strategic movements of the armies in the Netherlands, Lorraine, Alsace and along the Rhine. The historical narrative is attributed to Philippe-Henri, Comte de Grimoard, whilst the cartographical and topographical material was produced within the circle of the Beaurain family of geographers. Grimoard was reportedly so dissatisfied with the censorship interventions in his text that most copies appeared under Beaurain’s name. The title is therefore also an interesting example of the complex issues of authorship in late eighteenth-century military-historical publishing. Excludes the atlas. The inside cover bears an engraved bookplate of Comte Baillet de Latour; the front endpaper has a small tear at the margin and is occasionally slightly stained. An attractively bound copy.
