France – The French Revolution Gazette nationale ou Le Moniteur universel (1 January 1794 to 31 December 1794). Tome Neuvieme (and) Tome Dixieme. 2 vols. Paris, 1794/95. pp. 409–1152. pp. 1153–1500, 1–420 (each complete). Fol. (46 x 29 cm). Contemporary half-leather binding on 6 bands with red-edged pages (heavily rubbed, scuffed and bumped; spine and cover with small losses; joints partly split). Brunet VI, 1866 – issues 102 to 365 and issues 1 to 101, each with a title page dated 1795. – ‘Le Moniteur Universel’ was a daily periodical on the French Revolution, founded in Paris on 24 November 1789 under the title ‘Gazette Nationale ou Le Moniteur Universel’ by Charles-Joseph Panckoucke and discontinued on 31 December 1868. These half-yearly volumes provide an insight into the mood in France at the height of the Jacobin “Reign of Terror”, including, amongst other things, reports on the fall and execution of Robespierre, Herbert’s and Danton’s, as well as the almost daily ‘death lists’ of those executed. - Title pages slightly foxed; paper naturally slightly yellowed and with brown spots; the first two leaves of vol. 10 have a tear approx. 5 cm long and a small area where the pages have stuck together, resulting in minor loss of text; otherwise generally well preserved.
