A Hebrew primer and reader for elementary and religious education in the Jewish communities of Hungary. The title ‘Kol Jehuda’ (‘The Voice of Jehuda’) derives from the primer by M. Stengel, a religious education teacher at the Jewish Community of Vienna. It was published in 1911 by Schlesinger in Vienna and Budapest; a Hungarian edition of 56 pages is documented as early as 1900. Such primers taught reading in the Ashkenazi pronunciation and contained the most important prayers in liturgical order. They were used for decades in Jewish primary schools and Talmud Torah schools, as well as in adult education. The Jós. Schlesinger bookshop, with branches in Vienna and Budapest, was one of the most important publishers of Judaica in the Danube Monarchy. Following the family’s emigration, it continued to operate in Tel Aviv under the name ‘Sinai’. First edition of this version.
