Judaica Waltsch, Simon Sefer Naveh kodesh: ve-hu kolel hokhmat ha-medidah veha-meshulashim (...) u-veur nakhon al hilkhot kidush ha-hodesh leha-Rambam... (German: Nava Kodesch. A textbook on geometry and trigonometry, together with a commentary on Maimonides de Novalunae.) With 1 folded, engraved plate containing geometric diagrams. Berlin, (Bi-defus Hevrat hinukh nearim) Published by the Jewish Freyschule, 1786. 53 leaves. Contemporary half-leather binding (heavily rubbed, bumped and scuffed; spine with missing sections; remnants of a label). Rare. – Cf. Zeitlin, *Bibliotheca hebraica post-Mendelssohniana*, 403. – “On 8 January 1784, the directors of the Jewish Free School in Berlin, Isaak Daniel Itzig and David Friedländer, a petition to King Frederick II, in which they requested permission to establish a printing works and a bookshop, the proceeds of which were to benefit the Free School. The licence granted on 3 February 1784 stated ‘that the aforementioned Free School shall be permitted to print books in Hebrew and other Oriental languages’. Although the Hebrew or ‘Oriental’ text was required to constitute the main body of the work to be published, it was permitted to add translations, notes and explanations ‘in any other language’ and in the corresponding script. The entire catalogue of the Oriental Printing House ultimately consisted of publications of Hebrew texts or German translations set in Hebrew characters. (See Lohmann, Orientalische Buchdruckerei). - Title page with an ink stain; margins browned and showing slight foxing. Generally well preserved. With 1 folded engraved plate featuring geometric diagrams. Contemporary half-cloth binding (rubbed, bumped and chafed). Contains a handbook on geometry and trigonometry and an extensive study on Maimonides. Rare print from the Berlin Jewish school, which was granted permission in 1784 to print its own publications in Hebrew. – Title page with a small ink stain; pages partly slightly browned and with minimal staining. Overall in good condition. This lot is subject to standard tax.
