Militaria A journey abroad undertaken by Major Linde and Captain Petersen in the year 1860. 2 volumes, containing handwritten and lithographed text, as well as an atlas. With 29 large-format pen-and-ink drawings, some folded or double-page, of which 24 are on folio plates and 3 are folded or 1 is double-page, including 22 hand-coloured or grey-inked; furthermore, numerous pen-and-ink drawings in the text, some full-page, often coloured and some mounted, as well as 20 large-format folded lithographs and 2 lithographic maps. Copenhagen, (1847–56)–1860. 296 pages, of which around 280 are text pages with varying numbering (text volume) and 24 plates (atlas volume) 37 x 23 cm and 72 x 55 cm. Uniform marbled half-leather binding with gold-embossed ornamental title on the front cover and back cover, respectively, on a leather label; the covers lined with lapwing paper (both spines bearing handwritten paper labels. Bindings split at the top of the text volume; corners bumped and scuffed). A highly interesting and richly illustrated manuscript on various aspects of European military architecture beyond fortress architecture. – A compilation manuscript in Danish, German and French, written, amongst others, by the two Danish officers named in the title, comprising 8 different sections on military buildings and installations in Prussia, Austria, France and Belgium, magnificently illustrated with partly hand-coloured architectural drawings and plans of a supposedly bomb-proof military hospital, barracks, service buildings and garrisons, appearing in the text, as full-page illustrations or on plates, as well as an additional number of lithographs by military lithographers on large folding plates. - Volume 1: pp. 1–96, containing numerous text illustrations, some hand-coloured, and 3 plates with hand-coloured pen-and-ink drawings of details of military architecture. The drawings in the atlas illustrate this travelogue. They show views and façades, floor plans and layouts of military installations in Olomouc, Prague, Lyon, Vincennes, Sathonay and Beverloo. The Camp de Beverloo was a military training ground near the Belgian town of Leopoldsburg. Its new buildings are depicted on 20 large (345 x 850 mm) folded lithographic plates. – II–IV. Description of the chapel stoves. Description of the stoves installed in the kitchen of the barracks near Olomouc (now the Czech Republic). German text on pages 99–108, accompanied by two large-format illustrations of the kitchen stoves in the atlas and three further brief descriptions of the stoves in French and German with drawings within the text on pages 111–118. - V. In places slightly finger-stained, occasionally with minor soiling and foxing, otherwise in very good condition.
