Description
Fashion *Code de la Cravate*, *Traité Complet des Formes, de la Mise, des Couleurs de la Cravate*. With two engraved plates. Paris, Audin, 1828. 2 leaves, 127 pp. 12°. Half leather with gold-stamped title on the spine (worn and bumped, upper capital letter broken off, hinge cracked). Extremely rare. Only once recorded in the international market. – A detailed treatise on wearing and tying various tie knots. Following a theoretical introduction to the accessory, the book discusses the various ways of wearing a tie, as illustrated in the plates. The text is divided into several theoretical sections and guides the reader from a detailed definition of the accessory, through the necessary stylistic and practical knowledge, to a systematic presentation of the various knots and ways of wearing a tie. Particularly noteworthy are the two long, folded copper plates, which show numerous variations in the way the tie is worn; in the literature, these are sometimes described as distinguishing between ‘cravates contemporaines ou de circonstance’ and ‘cravates classiques ou anciennes’. Other descriptions refer to a total of seventy illustrated ways of wearing the cravat, with the plates possibly being executed as steel engravings. Context and significance. The book is part of a wave of short, often anonymous or pseudonymous ‘manuals’ and ‘codes’ which, in the late 1820s in France, treated the cravat as a central element of masculine elegance and social distinction. Chronologically, it follows on directly from works such as *Cravatiana* (1823) and *L’Art de mettre sa cravate* (1827), and is a typical example of the literary fashion advice of the Restoration period, aimed at the ‘homme de bon ton’ and ‘fashionables’. Some water and mould stains. Overall, still in good condition. Fashion. – Extremely rare.
