Description
National Socialism A pictorial report from five concentration camps. Published by the US War Information Office on behalf of the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in April 1945. Contains 44 photographic illustrations, some double-page spreads, from Buchenwald, Belsen, Gardelegen, Nordhausen and Ohrdruf. 16 leaves, 26.5 x 21.5 cm. Paperback (cover slightly browned, with minimal staining, some creases and minor discolouration). Parr/Badger, I, 194: In May 1945, the American Office of War Information (OWI) published this booklet for the Psychological Warfare Division (PWD). Owing to the difficult distribution situation, only a few copies were put into circulation. The report played an important role as evidence at the Nuremberg Trials and was the very first photographic publication of the post-war period. From the foreword: “This pictorial report concerns every German. It provides evidence of what the British and American troops found when, during their advance through Germany in April 1945, they came across a number of concentration camps. This booklet consists mainly of photographs, for the printed word cannot convey what it was really like in Buchenwald and Belsen, in Nordhausen and Ohrdruf. Thousands of Germans living near these places were taken on guided tours of the camps to see with their own eyes what crimes had been committed there in their name. But for most Germans, it is not possible to visit a concentration camp. This pictorial report is intended for them.” - Two pages with minimal tears along the right-hand margin; otherwise, pages show only minimal creasing. - Very rare. Original paper cover (slightly creased with minimal defects and stains.) "This small but important book, consisting of a mere 32 pages and 44 shocking photographs, was distributed by the American War Information Unit at the end of the Second World War in order to convey to the civilian population the enormity of the crimes committed by the Nazis (...). Thus this book, which is little more than a pamphlet, may represent the single most significant use of photography as a witness in the history of the medium” (See Parr/Badger). The brochure played an important role in the Nuremberg trials and was circulated only in small numbers. – Pages slightly browned or, in rare cases, minimally stained; 2 pages with a minimal tear at the right-hand margin; some creases.
