Contemporary leather binding with rich gilt decoration and a gold-stamped spine label, a coat of arms as a supralibros on the cover and marbled edges on the reverse (slightly rubbed and bumped). Graesse V, 504 – Pufendorf’s magnum opus on natural and international law was first published in 1672 ‘in a powerfully nuanced Neo-Latin’. In the preceding decade, Pufendorf had held the first chair of natural and international law. This office obliged him to interpret Hugo Grotius, and indeed he was regarded in his day as ‘Grotii filius’, so much did he seem to be a child of his spirit. However, Pufendorf shares with the Dutchman only the morality of scholastic natural law; otherwise, he tends towards Hobbes” (KNLL 13, 710). – Reprinted: J. Barbeyraci.
