With an engraved frontispiece, 2 copperplate title vignettes, 1 engraved header vignette, 1 engraved initial and title page in red and black. Amsterdam, de Coup, 1724. 4 leaves, XLIII pp., 1 leaf, 518 pp., pp. 519–1001, 19 leaves. 4°. Contemporary leather binding on 5 bands with a magnificently ornamented gold-stamped spine and title, edges speckled on three sides (scraped, rubbed and bumped, partly stained, a few places with slight wormholes). Ter Meulen-D. 654. Meylan 126. – Fifth French edition, but the first translated by Jean Barbeyrac, with detailed annotations. Barbeyrac was a Franco-Swiss jurist and legal historian who, amongst other things, taught at the University of Groningen. - A few leaves slightly (stain) discoloured and creased; endpapers partly removed; reverse of frontispiece stained (discolouration faintly showing through). Overall, an extremely clean and well-preserved copy with highly contrasting copperplate vignettes. Law – 2 parts in 1 vol. with engraved frontispiece, 2 copper title vignettes, 1 engraved head vignette, 1 engraved initial and title page in red and black. Contemporary leather binding with five bands and a splendid ornamental gilt spine; sprinkled edges on three sides (scuffed, rubbed and bumped, with some stains and a few spots showing signs of worm damage). - Fifth French edition, but the first translated by Jean Barbeyrac, with detailed annotations. Barbeyrac was a French-Swiss jurist and legal historian who taught at the University of Groningen. - A few pages are somewhat foxed and creased in the margins; the endpapers have been partly removed; the reverse of the frontispiece is stained (showing through only slightly). Overall, a very clean and well-preserved copy with high-contrast copper-engraved vignettes. This lot is subject to standard tax.
