Pothier was a judge and professor in Orléans and was one of the most influential civil lawyers of the pre-revolutionary 18th century. Many of his works formed the basis of the Code Civil. He initially conducted research into Roman law, having recognised its significance for French law. Thus, in his work *Pandectae Justinianeae in novum ordinem digestae*, he gave the Pandects a fundamentally new systematisation and condensed the complex subject matter down to its essentials. By systematically improving the organisational structure of the Digests, he sought to counter the Enlightenment’s criticism of Roman law. – Slightly tanned.
