Description
Russia Manifesto concerning the judicial inquisition and judgement—as ordered by His Imperial Majesty the Tsar—regarding Tsarevich Alexius Petrovich. Delivered in St Petersburg and published there for the public’s information. Translated from the Russian original. Frankfurt, by Joh. Andr. Rüdigern, 1719 and 1728. Large 8°. 16 pp. Stapled (slightly stained). A rare manifesto concerning the trial and death sentence of Tsarevich Alexei Petrovich, the eldest son of Tsar Peter the Great. - VD18 10364048 - Tsarevich Alexei rejected his father’s radical Western reforms and became the figurehead of hope for conservative, old-Russian circles. In 1716, he fled Russia and sought asylum with the Habsburg Emperor in Vienna. Peter the Great regarded this as treason and conspiracy. He lured his son back to Russia with the promise of forgiveness. A special commission was set up. Under severe torture (the knout), Alexei was interrogated in order to identify his co-conspirators. On 24 June 1718, a secular court comprising civil servants and military officers sentenced the Tsarevich to death for high treason. - Accompanying the preceding document: ‘Manifesto, or Detailed Account of the Renunciation and Degradation that took place in Moscow on 3/14 February 1718’… 1718. 6 unnumbered pages, stapled. - VD18 90590856 - The document records the official removal of the heir apparent from the line of succession (the so-called ‘renunciation’ and ‘degradation’) immediately following his forced return from abroad.
