Stählin, Jacob von
Original anecdotes about Peter the Great. Heard from distinguished individuals in Moscow and St Petersburg, and rescued from oblivion. With an engraved portrait. Leipzig, Breitkopf, 1785. 22 pp., 422 pp. 8°. Contemporary half leather with red edging (slightly rubbed).
First edition. – Cat. Russica p. 2100. - Jacob von Stählin (1709–1785) studied under Gottsched and was appointed to the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences in 1735. - One of the most famous and historically valuable contemporary collections of sources on the Russian Tsar Peter I. Over the course of decades, Stählin collected reports, eyewitness accounts and narratives from people who had known the Tsar personally – including court officials, diplomats, craftsmen and military personnel. Through his short, pithy anecdotes, Stählin painted a very vivid, multifaceted and often unvarnished picture of the ruler. – Pages are slightly yellowed throughout; overall, a good copy.
