Rohr, Zürcher Neujahrsblätter, pp. 17ff. – A rare and culturally significant series of Zurich New Year’s publications by the ‘Society of Learned Gentlemen at the Chorherrenstube’. The series began with the issue ‘Auf das Neujahr 1779’ and was published as an annual New Year’s gift for Zurich’s young people eager to learn. It also follows in the tradition of Zurich’s philanthropic societies: the distribution or sale served a charitable purpose and was linked to support for the orphanage. Written in a popular yet scholarly style intended for a young readership, the booklets primarily cover material from Zurich’s history, Swiss history and the history of the Reformation. The focus is on: biographical sketches of Zurich clergymen, canons, teachers and scholars; articles on church and Reformation history, particularly the Zurich tradition; historical and biographical accounts from older and more recent Swiss history; material on local educational, scholarly and social history, and occasional topics relating to natural history, moral education and general knowledge. – A fine copy.
