Engels, Friedrich
The Bedouins (first publication). In: Bremisches Conversationsblatt, Vol. 1, No. 40 (16 September 1838), as part of: Ibid. Edited by L. W. Heyse. Vol. 1, Nos. 1–70 and Vol. 2, Nos. 1–52 in 2 volumes (no further volumes published). Bremen, printed and published by J. G. Heyse, 1838–39. 440 pp. and 280 pp. in contemporary half-leather, the covers bound in multicoloured marbled paper (spine heavily scuffed).
The first printed text by Friedrich Engels, presented here with the complete run of the journal in which it appeared. – MEGA III/1, pp. 78ff. – Not listed in Stammhammer. - From August 1838, Engels, then aged 17, lived in Bremen as an apprentice clerk, where he came into contact with the liberal and radical democratic poetry of the Vormärz period (particularly Freiligrath) and of ‘Young Germany’. In the poem ‘Beduinen’ (Bedouins), which, however, appeared anonymously, he laments a troupe of acting Bedouins who, instead of being free in the desert, pretend to be so in Germany for money. - The ‘Bremisches Conversationsblatt’ was a literary and cultural supplement to the ‘Bremer Zeitung’, intended to represent Bremen in German daily literature. Among other things, it published poems, reviews and essays. - Provenance: Stamp ‘Schulzeschen Buchhandlung in Oldenburg’ on the first title pages of each volume. - Nos. 1–5 (1838) with additions in the white margins; in places, minor and small-area water stains, fingerprints, dirt marks and mould spots; paper showing slight browning throughout; volumes in good overall condition. The page containing the significant biographical document relating to the socialist revolutionary is in good condition.
