Turkey – Ottoman Empire Reis, Piri Bahrije. The Turkish Sailing Manual for the Mediterranean Sea, 1521. Edited, translated and annotated by Paul Kahle. 2 vols. With numerous illustrations. Berlin and Leipzig, Walter de Gruyter & Co., 1926–1927. Paperback with front and back titles (slightly stained, slightly bumped). Edition of the first version of the Kitâb-I Bahriyye. – Volume I. Text, 2 instalments, chapters 29–60, and Volume II. Translation, 1st instalment, chapters 1–28. - Facsimile and German translation of the first version of the Kitâb-I Bahriyye, literally ‘Book of Navigation’, dating from 1521. The Turkish admiral and cartographer Piri Reis began writing the work in 1511, after his uncle and former pirate, Kemal Reis, lost his life in a shipwreck. In 1513, Reis drew his first world map, which was based on more than 20 earlier maps. Just a few years after completing the Kitâb-I Bahriyye, he revised the work once more and presented it to Sultan Süleyman I – some pages with marginal stains. Overall, very well preserved. Original wrappers with titles on the cover and spine (minimally stained, slightly bumped). - Edition of the first version of the Kitâb-I Bahriyye. - Facsimile and German translation of the first version of the Kitâb-I Bahriyye (literally ‘Book of Navigation’), dating from 1521.
