Description
Hungary
A collection of 51 watercolours, some with enhanced highlights, depicting portraits of Hungarian rulers. Probably Hungary, c. 1700. Dimensions: 32 x 22 cm. Each mounted on heavy card.
Based on the Hungarian rulers’ portraits in the work *Mausoleum Potentissimorum ac Gloriossimorum Regni Apostolioce Regum et Primorim Militantis Ungariae Ducum* (1664) by Ferenc Nadasdy (Chief Crown Judge and General, 1622–1671). The poses, weapons and clothing are identical, though there is individual artistic licence in the additional colour scheme and artistic execution, particularly with regard to the background. Fifty-one of the collection’s original 59 portraits are preserved. Based on the work mentioned above, 13 of the 14 Hungarian dukes and 38 of the 45 Hungarian kings are represented. - Each with a Latin inscription. - 18 plates (Hungarian kings) numbered by a later hand (18th century) and provided with brief notes in Hungarian. - An exceptional and colourful ensemble, characterised primarily by intense shades of blue, red, green and yellow. - The sheets are somewhat dusty and slightly stained, in places rubbed and with minor discolouration at the edges; overall in good condition.
