Original leather binding with rich oriental decoration on the front cover and spine in black, blue and gold, and three-sided gilt edging (joints, edges and corners scuffed). Rare first French edition of this fine work. – Cf. Ibrahim-Hilmy II, 324 – Kainbacher I, 145 – Blackmer II, 1509 (all refer only to the German or English editions). - Karl Werner, one of the most significant and avidly travelling watercolourists of his time, travelled through Egypt in 1864 and, following the Nile, ventured beyond the First Cataract into Nubia. The magnificent chromolithographs depicting views of and from Cairo, Giza, Luxor and Karnak, as well as the decorative scenes featuring a bazaar, coffee house, money changer, barber etc., are based on the watercolours produced during this journey.
