Contemporary blind-stamped leather binding with 2 roundels (some wear, upper headband with minor scuffs). First German edition of this significant work on the three kingdoms of Kongo, Matamba and Angola, as well as the Capuchin missions there. - Sabin 11390 - Borba de Moraes I, 142 - Cavazzi was an Italian Capuchin missionary who worked in Angola and the Congo from 1654 to 1669. His work ranks among the most important European sources on the history, geography, ethnography and culture of Central Africa in the 17th century. The copperplate engravings feature numerous depictions of landscapes, towns, people, animals, customs and religious beliefs, as well as one map. - The work has been professionally restored. The frontispiece is missing; the folded plates have damage to the edges, some with slight loss of image; one plate has a large tear in the corner. Some pages have filled-in missing sections, some with slight loss of text. Title page has an ink stain; it is partly slightly browned and stained, but overall still a good copy of this rare work.
