Narrative of a journey to the Zulu country, in South Africa. Undertaken in 1835. With a coloured lithographed frontispiece, 25 plates (including 1 coloured lithograph) and 2 folded maps. London, Crofts, 1836. IV, 412 pp. Contemporary half-leather binding with red edges (slightly rubbed).
First edition. – Mendelssohn I, p. 587 – Abbey, Travel, 332. – Allen Francis Gardiner (1794–1851) travelled the world as an officer in the Royal Navy. “From 1834 to 1838, he made earnest efforts to establish Christian communities in Zululand, but political events and wars with the local population collectively prevented any lasting success” (DNB). “An interesting description of the country” (Mendelssohn I, p. 587). He brokered a treaty between the Zulu chief Dingane and the inhabitants of Port Natal (Durban) concerning land rights and the status of refugees. However, this agreement was short-lived and lasted less than two months. A. F. Gardiner was unable to control the settlers, and they were neither able nor willing to abide by the treaty. - Somewhat stained and tanned; 1 map with a tear backed, bearing several blind stamps.
