From: Voyage dans l’Afrique occidentale comprenant l’exploration du Sénégal etc. et de la Gambie, exécuté, en 1843 et 1844. Paris, Bertrand, 1846. Size approx. 25.5 x 33.5 cm each.
Includes: Woman from the vicinity of St Louis / Yoloff from the Wallo region. War costume. – Dorviche Moor / White Negro. – Mandinka from Wolli. War costume / Fulani woman from Cantorah (banks of the Gambia). - Fulani woman from the village of Kouar / Fulani man from the same village. War costume. - Samba-Coumba-Diama. Tounka from Galam / Sarracoler-Bakiri. War costume. - Girot from the Bondou region. Ceremonial costume / Griotte from the same region. Everyday costume. - Griot from the Galam region. Tam-tam player / Costume worn by young Black men. During the month preceding the circumcision ceremony. - Raffenel was an explorer and writer. He travelled to, amongst other places, the Caribbean, Brazil, the United States, Madagascar and Senegal. - Stamped and hand-written number on the reverse. - Mostly stained by fingerprints, pen marks and water; some fading and tears along the edges; some corners creased; otherwise generally still in good condition. - Includes: 5 plates with ethnographic motifs from Jacques Arago’s ‘Promenade autour du monde, pendant les années 1817, 1818, 1819 et 1820’ (1822), including: King of the Caroline Islands, Battle between two Cannibals of Ombay, Method of executing a criminal on the Sandwich Islands, etc.
