Narrative of a ten-year residence at Tripoli in Africa: from the original correspondence in the family of the late Richard Tully, Esq., the British consul, comprising authentic memoirs and anecdotes of the reigning pasha, his family, and other persons of distinction, as well as an account of the domestic customs of the Moors, Arabs and Turks. With 5 coloured aquatints and 1 folded map. London, H. Colburn, 1816. XIII pp., 1 fol., 370 pp. 4°. Contemporary half leather with round back label (slightly scuffed).
First edition. – Abbey Travel 301 – Playfair, Tripoli 143 – Tooly 494 – Tully was the British consul in Tripoli and had close personal ties with the ruling pasha and his family. This account, which, according to the preface to the first edition, is compiled from letters written by Tully’s sister between 1783 and 1795, provides detailed information about life at the court of the Regent of Tripoli and about the country and its people. The beautiful copperplate engravings are in rich colours. - Text slightly browned and partly somewhat stained; plates somewhat browned and showing fingerprints.
