Description
America
(Niagara Falls.) c. 1820. Watercolour on two joined sheets of machine-made paper, mounted over the entire surface onto linen. Approx. 21.5 x 106.6 cm.
A large-format, artistically remarkable watercolour of what are arguably the world’s most famous waterfalls. The untitled depiction is a stylised close-up on the water, heading towards the precipice, with woodland in the background beneath a slightly cloudy sky and a few scattered houses on the right. - The margins, particularly on the left and right, have minor losses; there are a few small tears at the edges; the colours are slightly rubbed in a few places; otherwise the work is well preserved and the colours are fresh.
