Africa – Madagascar Logerais, Jean and Juliette Original materials by Jean and Juliette Logerais in 2 notebooks. 1. Journal de Madagascar. Excerpts from letters addressed to their mother. 1 February 1904 – 23 February 1906 (10 January 1904 – 17 March 1906, including the journey). Signed J. Logerais. 2. Journal de Madagascar 1904–1906. Continuation. And: 29 inserted sheets of coated paper, handwritten with the title ‘Madagascar 1896–1909’ containing 69 original photographs (silver gelatine, silver bromide and albumin prints) on various types of paper, inserted single-sided into slits, all with handwritten, mostly dated captions beneath the inserts. c. 1896–1909. 8°. Unbound. The front covers each titled ‘Madagascar’ and bearing the mounted monogram ‘J L’; the spines numbered ‘A’ and ‘B’; and 2° (sheets) with photographs: 19 x 24.5 – 9 x 12 cm (spines of the notebook covers with small tears, rubbed; the title page with tears and some finger stains). A unique collection comprising two notebooks and associated ephemera, containing significant accounts of his stay and work in northern Madagascar, together with rare photographs. – From the estate of Dr Jean Logerais, the colonial official in charge of the hospital in Mahajanga. - The notebooks contain copies, made in the 1910s, of 52 letters written by Logerais’s wife, Juliette, to her mother between 1904 and 1906 whilst travelling and in Madagascar, mainly containing vivid descriptions of medical services and the life of the French upper classes. - The main text is supplemented by pasted-in or enclosed handwritten or printed ephemera, e.g. an ink drawing within the text showing a floor plan of the hospital, a small map of Madagascar, a pencil drawing of a young Malagasy woman (from the front and from behind), programmes for two theatre performances in Mahajanga (one of which was an amateur production featuring Mme Logerais), a short essay on agriculture in Madagascar, etc. - The 69 photographs (46 measuring approx. 19 x 24.5 cm, 16 approx. 12 x 17 cm and 7 approx. 9 x 12 cm) depict, amongst other things, the town of Mahajanga and its surroundings, including bird’s-eye views, detailed close-ups and panoramas of the sea and the quay – some featuring scenes of harbour life – as well as streets, squares and buildings, and the island of Nosy Be. Also included are portraits of the Queen of Ankatsepe and her ladies-in-waiting, three chiefs from the Comoros, the Sakalava people and other indigenous inhabitants, as well as French officers. - Some prints are slightly silver-stained, faded or browned. - Overall, a historically significant collection of original materials and predominantly sharp, high-contrast photographs of northern Madagascar shortly after its colonisation by France (1897).
