Atlases
A Pocket Atlas for the General Description of the Earth. Drawn by Captain (C. Chr. Fr.) Radefeld and First Lieutenant (L.) Renner. With 115 steel-engraved maps and plans, mostly with coloured borders. No place (Hildburghausen, published by the Bibliographical Institute, undated (1834–41). Quarto 8°. Slightly later marbled half-leather binding of the period with a printed short title on a paper label; covers bound in stone-marmorised paper with red edging on the reverse (corners slightly bumped; spine and covers scuffed).
First edition of this remarkable miniature atlas with highly detailed steel engravings. - Espenhorst 180f. - A complete copy of the pocket atlas, sought after for its detailed maps and precise place names, distributed in instalments from 1834 onwards under the title *Meyer’s Pfennig-Atlas*. The ‘Atlas für den Handgebrauche’ was in fact a small-format reprint comprising 12 maps, each featuring two circular plans of European cities (Stockholm, Lisbon, Porto, Karlsruhe, Milan, Verona, Venice, Mantua, Dresden, Bremen, Breslau, Liegnitz, Halle, Erfurt, Strasbourg, Basel, Baden-Baden, Heidelberg, Würzburg, Ulm, Marienbad, Teplitz and Darmstadt, Frankfurt am Main), each containing two circular plans of European cities. - The engraved title page is missing (which lists 116 maps; according to Espenhorst, this includes the title page itself); it has been replaced by a later title page, printed largely with the same text. The slightly later endpapers show signs of glue staining; the various papers are fox-stained in places and slightly browned. Overall, a well-preserved copy, featuring maps that are mostly colour-outlined in many colours with broad borders.
