Rizzi-Zannoni, (Giovanni Antonio)
Geographical Atlas containing the World Map and the Four Parts, with the various States of Europe. Each with an engraved frontispiece, title page (engraved by L. Legrand) and a double-sheet-sized map index, as well as 31 double-sheet-sized copperplate maps, some coloured by area and some by outline (numbered a, 1–27, 7bis, 10bis and 24bis). Paris, Lattré, 1762. 5 leaves (preface, frontispiece, title page, illustrated plates), 62 leaves, small 12° (12.3 x 8 cm). Marbled. Contemporary calf binding with partly floral ornamentation; gilt lettering on the spine and fore-edges, as well as the title on a leather label, endpapers of coloured snail-patterned marbled paper, and red-edged pages (with minor losses to the headbands; corners bumped and scuffed).
A rare and charming pocket-sized world atlas. - Not in Phillips. - This fully engraved pocket atlas by the Italian geographer and cartographer Giovanni Antonio Rizzi-Zannoni (1736–1814), who was then in French service (including at the Royal Dépôt des Cartes et Plans de la Marine), contains consistently precisely drawn and boldly engraved maps of the Ptolemaic fixed-star sphere, both hemispheres, and extensive overview maps of Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America, the Caribbean, the British Isles, Scandinavia, European Russia, France (general map and 4 detailed maps) and Germany (general map and 6 detailed maps)—presumably each intended to be assembled into a whole—the Netherlands and Flanders, Prussia, Poland, Spain, Italy and European Turkey. - Some maps have slight foxing and soiling in the margins; otherwise a clean copy with maps in rich antique colours.
A rare and charming pocket-sized world atlas, with an allegorical frontispiece, title page and a double-page map index, as well as 31 double-page outline and partly fully coloured maps, all in splendid copper engravings. Bound in a marbled contemporary calf with partial floral gold tooling, gilt title on a mounted leather label, decorative endpapers made of coloured snail-marbled paper, and red edges throughout (with minor flaws to the headbands, the corners somewhat bumped, and the boards worn). - Not listed in Phillips. - This fully engraved pocket atlas by the Italian geographer and cartographer Giovanni Antonio Rizzi-Zannoni (1736–1814), who was then in the service of the French government (including the Royal Depot of Naval Charts and Maps), contains consistently precise and boldly engraved maps of the Ptolemaic celestial sphere, both hemispheres, and extensive maps providing overviews of Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America, the Caribbean, the British Isles, Scandinavia, European Russia, France (overview and 4 inset maps) and Germany (overview and 6 inset maps), the latter presumably intended to be assembled, the Netherlands and Flanders, Prussia, Poland, Spain, Italy and European Turkey. - Some maps show slight foxing and soiling in the margins. Otherwise, a clean copy with maps in rich contemporary colouring.
